The Finest Fighting Irish Excitement On Tap

Behind The Blarney

AdamN

AdamN is the brain behind South Bend Blarney.  My love of Irish football started January 1st, 1992.  An innocent 5th grader, I went over to my best friend’s house to enjoy some good times (probably playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and some Lavello’s pizza.  Adam H’s dad had on some good ole’ New Year’s Day college football, and it happened to be Notre Dame vs. Florida in the Sugar Bowl.  Some cheering and some cursing (hey, Florida was passing up and down the field early on), caught our attention, and we started to watch the game.  We were told that the Irish were heavy underdogs, and it looked that way.  I can’t remember the score but we were all disappointed as Florida seemed to have all of the momentum.  Then came the second half, and Jerome Bettis seemingly breaking free for fifty yards every time he touched the ball, scoring touchdown after touchdown! The Irish would be victorious, trumping Spurrier and the Fun’N'Gun.   I honestly can’t remember if the Irish were ever as out of the game as I had thought at the time, but it really stuck with me how they had been down and fought back.  The next year I casually followed as Reggie Brooks had a season for the ages (8 yards per carry!), and of course the year after was the championship run.  By ‘94 and Ron Powlus, I was glued to the t.v. every Irish Saturday, and have been ever since.
