ND 2010: Fact Or Fiction?
August 16th, 2010 . by adamnWhat do you believe to be a fact in this world? A statement that is objective truth, unavoidable, unbreakable, and unwavering. Can you think of any? In fact, there are very few absolute facts out there, most statements that we take to be fact are not truly objective, they are formed theories based on a certain point of view (watch the Star Wars Trilogy if you don’t believe me).
I can only think of a few:
McDonald’s fries are the best in the world.
NDNation will do three or four posts a year comparing the Irish’s recruited “star talent” against other top programs “star talent”, and against on-field production (complete with graphs and everything).
Mel Gibson beats up women. Probably often.
That’s about it. Because I don’t know many statements that are without-a-doubt fact, I need your help to decide. Below are five comments about the Fighting Irish this season, tell me if you think they are fact, or fiction:
1.) Notre Dame will win at least 9 games this season.
2.) Dayne Crist will have a Brady Quinn circa 2005 breakout year (over 3,000 yards passing, 25-30 touchdown passes, 60%-65% completion percentage).
3.) Other than Dayne Crist, Theo Riddick is the most important Irish offensive player.
4.) Steve Filer will live up to his “top 100″ potential, and take the “drop” linebacker position from the step-too-slow, should-never-have been-considered-the-teams-best-defensive-player-Brian Smith?
5.) The defense will play up to its potential (possibly 6 top 100 recruits in the starting lineup), and actually stop some teams from scoring.
1. Fact
2. Fiction
3. Fact
4. Fact
5. Fact
Keith,
I hope you are right on, but I think #2 has to be fact for #1 to be fact. ND won’t have a dominating D, and I don’t think they can count on Armando Allen carrying them offensively.
1. Fact
2. Fiction. Quinn had that year when he was a third year starter. A little too much to expect from a first time starter.
3. Fiction. I think it is one of Allen/Hughes/Wood/Gray. We need a running game and one of those has to step up.
4. Fiction, but I wish it would be fact. I am concerned that they have moved Neal over. It does mean they are not satisfied with either. If Filer can fill the spot then we have more than enough speed at the edges. Right now, though Fiiler seems to be one of those kids who doesn’t quite break through.
5. Fact. I actually think this happens.
Va,
I like the way you think.
You are probably right on Crist, though I hope that Kelly’s track record for getting quarterbacks ready before they should be (Zach Collaros) accelerates the play of Crist as well.
As far as your running back call for second most important player, I was excited to see that Cierre Wood is really threatening. I don’t believe any other back had homerun ability. I also think that the receivers as a whole are the most important aspect of this offense.
I’d be lying if I said I was confident in the defense.
I want Filer too, all i have heard about is how great an athlete he is. I’d take Neal over Brian Smith, though.
